ABSTRACT

The journey is split into stages, divided over seven-days, taking you across the plateaus of the Hyblean Mountains to the Ionian coast. Along the way you will discover a number of Baroque cities including Palazzolo Acreide, Modica, Scicli and Noto, as well as Ragusa Ibla with all its treasures and Syracuse – the most important and elegant of all the ancient cities of Ancient Greek. You will also encounter unique geological spots of rare, natural beauty including the Riserva di Vendicari (Vendicari Nature Reserve), the seaside village of Marzamemi, the isola di Capo Passero (Cape Passero) and the isola delle Correnti (Correnti Island).

DAILY PROGRAM

  • Day 1: Arrive in Catania – Palazzolo Acreide

    Individual arrival at the Catania airport and transfer by Minivan to your hotel for check-in, followed by a bike fitting and briefing with our staff. Depending on arrival time, you may have time for a visit to the historic village of Palazzolo Acreide. Dinner at your hotel included in your package.

  • Day 2: Palazzolo Acreide – Ragusa Hiblae - Modica

    After exploring Palazzolo Acreide’s rich architectural history and monumental sites, you will bike across the Hyblean land – barren and wild in some places, arboreal in others, but characterised by remarkable beauty throughout, with its ancient dry-stone walls outlining the borders between properties. Along the way you can stop to admire the view and enjoy lunch in Ragusa Ibla, one of the jewels of the Hyblean territory.

    Heading out of Ragusa Hibla,you’ll veer along a slightly downhill path and, after a final climb of about 3 kilometers, you will reach the town of Modica, where you will find your accommodation for this evening.

  • Day 3: Modica – Scicli – Pozzallo

    From Modica you start along a typical valley, called 'Cava' in this area, slightly downhill to Scicli, another beautiful baroque city. And if you have seen the famous TV Series “Commissario Montalbano” the main square will look familiar to you – here is Montalbano's police station (town hall in reality). After a short climb you continue downhill and will soon see the bright colors of the Mediterranean Sea – you are cycling towards the sea now! You finish in Pozzallo, an important harbor and connection to Malta.

  • Day 4: Pozzallo - Marzamemi

    The first part of today follows along the coast. Plenty of sandy beaches invite for a refreshing swim. You then continue to Portopalo di Capo Passero, Sicily's southernmost point and important fishing village and finally Marzamemi, a charming fishing village of Arab origins.

  • Day 5: Marzamemi – Vendicari - Noto

    Your first stop today is the nature reserve Vendicari, a popular stop for migratory birds like flamingos and herons. The nature reserve has a beautiful beach but also the remains of a former tuna factory (tonnara). You continue on secondary roads among almond trees and vineyards until you arrive in Noto, a lively town and the capital of Sicilian Baroque. The stunning bright limestone buildings give the town a unique atmosphere, especially in the late afternoon, before sunset.

  • Day 6: Noto – Cavagrande del Cassibile

    Biking from Noto to the entrance of the Cavagrande Reserve is about 18 km. It is a steady, but gentle climb. First of all you will reach Noto Antica which is the old village of Noto before the destructive earthquake of 1693 and today is uninhabitated but very suggestive. Then you will arrive to Cavagrande which is the deepest of the canyons and the river Cassibile forms like lakes that invite for a swim. To arrive there you have to walk for about 1 hour. Finally, after 4 km of cycling, you’ll reach you farmhouse acommodation immersed in the natural habitat of Sicily countryside, dinner onsite included.

  • Day 7: Cavagrande del Cassibile - Syracuse

    For your final day, start with a spectacular downhill on switchbacks to the coast overlooking the Mediterranean sea until you arrive in Avola, city famous for the Nero d'Avola wine. You continue along the coast to Siracusa – the grand finale of your tour!

    Enjoy a stroll through the historical center, the island of Ortigia, with the beautiful Piazza Duomo which once the most important Greek temple of the town. You also should not miss the Archaeological Park Neapolis with a Greek Theater and a Roman Amphitheater. Celebrate your last evening on this tour with an aperitif in one of the water front bars over the grand harbour watching the sunset.
