ABSTRACT

This tour takes you along a stretch of coastline in the Campania region, south of the Amalfi Coast. This lesser-known area, called the Cilento, is less frequented by tourists yet boasts incredible natural scenery and cultural significance as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your journey begins in Paestum, a Magna Grecia colony known for its well-preserved temples, and continues to the Gulf of Policastro, a coastal strip with emerald waters and charming, uncrowded beach towns. Along the way, you’ll experience the authentic rural Cilento, with its olive groves and ancient villages. You will bike past world-famous cultural sites, through pristine natural areas, and along picturesque coastal scenery. Your trip will take you on small country roads, passing through rugged mountain landscapes and attractive countryside, featuring vineyards and olive groves.

  • Day 1: Arrival in Paestum (Capaccio)

    Arrive at your hotel near the world-famous Temples of Paestum, accessible by train from Naples or Salerno.

    If you wish, you can take a short ride past the temples and around the Greek city walls, or head down to the beach for a quick swim. If you arrive early, you can visit the temples today, giving you more time for a longer ride tomorrow. In the evening, enjoy a delightful dinner at a local restaurant in Paestum.

  • Day 2: Foothills of Paestum

    Start your journey by cycling through the historic Greek town of Paestum. Choose between a leisurely ride through the plains or a challenging route to medieval hamlets with stunning views. Enjoy lunch at a local buffalo farm with fresh mozzarella. Continue through the Sele River plain, past the Capo di Fiume springs, and optionally visit Giugnano and Cicerale before returning to your hotel.

  • Day 3: From Paestum to San Marco di Castellabate

    Your trip takes you on quiet roads through fragrant Mediterranean maquis and shady olive groves up into the coastal hills above the town of Agropoli, through some dreamy medieval hamlets, and down again to the coastal village of Castellabate. After arriving at your hotel and settling in, you can either cycle or walk the short path along the coast to the wonderful little islet of Leucosia, situated in the marine reserve of Punta Licosa, or take a stroll through the centre of town for a pre-dinner aperitif at one of the local bars.

  • Day 4: Around Monte Stella (loop ride from San Marco di Castellabate)

    Today, take some time to rest and visit the medieval castle, where you can enjoy a splendid view of the coastal hamlets of San Marco and Santa Maria. Next, you climb further up to Perdifumo and Mercato Cilento. From here, you have two options: either pass on the western side of the mountain or opt for a complete circumnavigation of Monte Stella. At the end of the day, you can either return to San Marco for a guided visit to the Alici di Menaica farm to taste the local Alici, or choose a slightly longer route that takes you down to the fishing village of Agnone.

  • Day 5: San Marco di Castellabate to Pisciotta

    A short climb takes you through Mediterranean maquis and pine woods to the ‘Ripe Rosse’ or Red Rocks. You then descend swiftly to the village of Acciaroli. Continuing along the coast, you pass through the fishing village of Pioppi. Following the coastal road, you reach Casalvelino Marina, then travel through the Alento River plain to Velia. From Velia, there’s one last steep climb to the old village of Ascea, which offers a commanding view of the coast. From Ascea, you’ll follow a stunning coastal route to the hilltop village of Pisciotta, one of the best-preserved medieval villages in the area, where you will settle for the night.

  • Day 6: Cape Palinuro to the southern Cilento Coast

    Today is a relatively easy day, taking you along the panoramic coastal road to the southern part of the Cilento. You will explore the mythical headland of Capo Palinuro, named after one of the helmsmen of the legendary hero Aeneas. This is one of the most famous spots in the Cilento National Park. You can bike through the village of Palinuro, make a scenic loop over the top of the cape, and stop at the tiny port. Upon arriving in the charming coastal town of Marina di Camerota, you can have a drink at the harbor before settling into your hotel.

  • Day 7: Marina di Camerota to Monte Bulgheria (loop ride)

    On this scenic climb, enjoy unparalleled views of the unspoiled Costa degli Infreschi coastline. Pass through Lentiscosa and the spectacularly located San Giovanni a Piro, with views of the Gulf of Policastro and towering cliffs. Bike up to Ciolandrea, one of Cilento’s best viewpoints, or have lunch in a quaint village restaurant. Continue around Mt. Bulgheria, optionally detouring to Roccagloriosa, and visit the abandoned medieval village of San Severino before returning through the Mingardo canyon to your hotel.

  • Day 8: End tour, depart from Marina di Camerota

    The tour ends in Marina di Camerota after breakfast today. Private transfer can be arranged to the train station in Marina di Camerota for travel back to Naples or Salerno.
