Sardinia

ABSTRACT

Biking enthusiasts worldwide are increasingly attracted to Sardinia for tours due to its vast, sparsely populated landscape, especially when compared to other Mediterranean islands. Outside its main cities like Cagliari, Alghero, Sassari, and Olbia, bikers can enjoy rides on well-maintained, low-traffic secondary roads through unspoiled nature. The island features quaint villages rich in history and culinary traditions, with friendly locals who are welcoming to bicyclists, possibly reflecting their own traditions of exploration and the leisurely pace of life. The varying landscapes across the island offer diverse and rewarding experiences for riders.

The first established bike routes in Sardinia began along the west coast, with a notable route from Alghero to Bosa, extending to Cabras and the Costa Verde, known for its scenic beauty and minimal traffic. This route, exceeding 70km daily, suits experienced cyclists and road bikers. For a less demanding option, starting from the Costa Verde offers shorter rides, around 50 km daily, ideal for various bike types, including trekking, gravel, and e-bikes.

Yet, Sardinia’s appeal extends beyond its west coast. Crossing the island to the Gennargentu mountains or reaching Villasimius on the east coast presents unique landscapes and challenges. The old SS125 route, rejuvenated for bicycling after the new SS125var was opened, provides diverse sea and mountain views up to the northern tip at Santa Teresa di Gallura. Bike tours available to explore these routes individually or, for the adventure seekers, undertake a comprehensive 14-day tour covering all the mentioned scenic areas.
