ABSTRACT

BikeBasilicata, a brand of Ferula Viaggi, is a tour operator based in Matera, Basilicata. Since 2002 our team has offered specialized excursions and bike tours in the southern Italian regions of Basilicata and Puglia. Our philosophy is slow tourism: we want to let you discover some of the most beautiful places in Southern Italy thanks to itineraries that are close to nature, culture and tradition.

We guarantee the knowledge and the professionalism thanks to more than 20 years of experience within the regions in activities linked to the environment. Our bike shop is fully stocked with a fleet of 250 bicycles available for rental. From Trani to Matera, from Alberobello to Lecce, we offer dozens of bike escapes with different levels of difficulty, lasting from 1 day to 2 weeks. For lovers of climbing and nature there’s the undiscovered Basilicata region with its Calanchi, known as the Lucanian “Dolomites of Southern Italy” and the Pollino Park. This rural region is full of traffic free roads and plenty of friendly locals ready to welcome visitors to their heartland.

We did an 8 day self-guided e-bike tour of Puglia. It was all expertly arranged with Michele and worked extremely well. The bikes were excellent and well-equipped. Our luggage was always waiting for us when we arrived at the next town. We chose 4 and 5 star accommodations which were very welcome at the end of 60-80 kms of cycling in weather that was hotter than we had expected for September. The staff at each hotel/resort were welcoming and engaging. The breakfasts were large and delicious. We rode 500 kms in total and many of the routes along secondary roads and even bike paths were ideal...

We were four Americans on a 6-day self-guided bike trip through Puglia and found Michele at Ferula Viaggi and BikeBasilicata on line. Michele could not have been more accommodating and responsive to our needs and put up with several trip starts and stops as a result of Covid. The bikes are high quality and rented gravel bikes and a tandem. The bikes held up great (we had the typical tire tube issues but that's biking). Michele arranged luggage transfer as well throughout. When we showed up to pick up the bikes, they were fully equipped with the proper pedals requested, lights, and repair kits. He's got every kind of bike you would want...call Michele.

We rented two bikes from Ferula Viaggi and did the self guided tour to Montescaglioso a 40 km round trip. The instructions were accurate and easy to follow the route was mainly on quiet roads and the instructions also contained helpful notes. The area is excellent cycling country. Michele and Pino were brilliant and the bikes very well maintained and appropriate for the ride we were doing and excellent value. We would certainly recommend Ferula Viaggi.
