Northeast

ABSTRACT

The Northeast of Italy, encompassing the Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia regions, is a haven for bicycling enthusiasts. This area offers a spectrum of routes from challenging ascents across the stunning Dolomites, to the gentler hills draped with vineyards. The region is also known for its extensive collection of flat protected cycle paths that meander through the valley floor of the mountainous regions, and pass by rich countryside, riverbanks, and lagoons teeming with wildlife, extending all the way to the Adriatic Sea’s shores.
Lake Garda, Italy’s largest lake and a renowned European tourist destination, adds to the region’s unique scenic allure. Veneto, nicknamed the “Land of Venice” is dotted with magnificent cities filled with opulent art and architecture and brimming with palaces and villas designed by the illustrious architect Andrea Palladio.

Trentino-Alto Adige stands out for its cultural uniqueness within Italy, as a German-speaking region with deep-rooted Germanic influences in its architecture, cuisine, and cultural traditions. Alongside the Alpe-Adria region, part of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, which borders Austria and Slovenia, this blend of Italian and Austrian heritage makes for a fascinating area for cultural exploration by bike.

Throughout these journeys, cyclists have numerous opportunities to indulge in the local cuisine, from traditional dishes to gourmet offerings, and to savor some of Italy’s finest wines such as Prosecco, Amarone, Soave, and Lugana. The Northeast of Italy not only challenges the body with its varied terrains but also delights the senses and deepens the understanding of its rich cultural mosaic.
